I, for one, love Chicago. It’s a great city. I could never live there, but it is a great place to visit. I also love spontaneity when traveling, but not the kind of spontaneity that makes you miss your flight due to immigration giving you a hard time (but we’ll save that for another conversation).
My absolute favorite thing about this confession though, is that the confessor calls it a boring story - which it is. It’s a beautifully boring story about a person realizing how truly happy they are in their current relationship. It’s really a confession about temptation in its most harmful form - a slight one (aka a slippery slope).
Our confessor is, due to unforeseen circumstances, in a situation where they have a choice that makes them reflect on how they feel about their current relationship. A religious person might say it was a test from God. I, on the other hand, might say… well… yeah it was definitely a test of some sort (I don’t know what I believe). Regardless, it isn’t a pass/fail kind of test, it’s just a test about where your true intentions are, and I’ll argue that you can pass the test as long as you follow your gut.
I do believe though that our confessor is swearing that the evidence they give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help them. They could have easily kept this entire story to themselves, but then they’d be admitting that they’d be hiding from something, which would mean they probably failed the test in a way.
Every detail in this story is honest. She admits she loves her partner. She admits she is having fun at this bar on her own. She admits that she’s attracted to this other guy at the bar. She admits that she kissed him back when he kissed her. But the most important fact of it all is that she admits that at that moment she realized where her heart is. And that’s why this story is beautifully boring.
I grew up my whole life hearing about avoiding temptation but not enough about confronting temptation head on. So here’s to those who have confronted temptation and came out better because of it.
This confession was collected from our booth in Colorado during its time at the Mishawaka Ampitheatre.
Cheers,
Tate
